Exploring SMRs for a low-carbon future
Alberta needs a stable supply of reliable and clean power generation to meet growing demand, and nuclear power has the potential to be a key solution to our energy needs today and for future generations.
Together, Capital Power and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) are jointly assessing the future development of nuclear power, specifically from grid-scale small modular reactors (SMRs) to provide a source of safe, clean, reliable and affordable electricity for Alberta.
But what are SMRs, and how can they be used to build Alberta’s clean electricity system of the future? Explore below to learn more.

What are SMRs
SMRs use the same basic principles as traditional nuclear reactors but are built using modular components for easier construction and scalability. Their small size makes them suitble for a range of applications, from grid scale power generation, to powering remote communities, to supporting industrial facilities.
